Solar companies in Strovolos and what local companies charge

Solar companies working in Strovolos price against three things, and only one of them is the panels. Modules and inverters are close to a commodity and move little between one Nicosia firm and the next. What separates two quotes for the same house is the roof — what already stands on it, and what condition its waterproofing is in — the electrical supply the system has to join, and who carries the net-metering application through the Electricity Authority of Cyprus. Two companies can reach very different totals on identical hardware because one priced roof penetrations, a board upgrade and the grid application, and the other assumed all three belonged elsewhere.

Local market summary

Strovolos sits inside the continuous urban area around Nicosia, and that geography shapes the market. An installer based in Nicosia, Lakatamia, Latsia, Aglantzia or Engomi is a short drive from any address here, so the travel component that distorts quotes elsewhere is largely absent. In Polis Chrysochous, distance from the main contractor base adds travel time to most quoted day rates; in Strovolos it does not. Quotes are unusually comparable as a result, which means the differences that do appear are real differences in scope.

The companies fall into recognisable groups: electrical contractors who added photovoltaics and treat it as another circuit, dedicated solar firms who also handle paperwork and servicing, and island-wide suppliers installing through subcontracted crews. No model is inherently better; they answer different questions well.

Three questions separate them on a first call. Does the company hold an electrical contractor's licence in its own name, or bring one in for the connection? Does it submit the net-metering application, or does the householder? And does it carry out, or subcontract, the roof waterproofing that mounting almost always disturbs? Subcontracting is not disqualifying — but handover points are where scope falls through. Structural loading on an older roof slab also brings in an engineer registered with the Cyprus Scientific and Technical Chamber.

• Mounting and roof type. A ballasted frame on a flat concrete roof, a tilted frame fixed through the deck and rails on a pitched tile roof are three different labour prices. Fixing through a flat roof opens the waterproofing, and whether reinstating it sits inside the price is the commonest gap between quotes.
• What the roof already carries. Cypriot flat roofs are working surfaces: solar water cylinders, storage tanks, condensers, aerials and dishes. Each takes area and casts a moving shadow, and relocating a tank is a plumbing job priced separately.
• Cable run, board and supply. Array to inverter, inverter to consumer unit and meter is real labour, and in a block it means riser access and agreement about routing. Older boards often have no spare way and no surge protection. Whether the supply is single-phase or three-phase changes inverter selection and is read off the meter, not assumed.
• Shading strategy. A tank, a stairwell head or a neighbouring block shading one panel for part of the day drags a whole string on a basic string inverter. Optimisers or microinverters cost more and are sometimes why a system performs as modelled.
• Access and administration. Scaffold or a hoist on a block is an access cost, not a solar cost. Administering the support scheme and the connection application is chargeable work: some firms absorb it, some bill it, some leave it.

Scope against scope is the comparison that works: what is fixed where, what is reinstated, who applies, what is warranted.

Local conditions that change the job

Strovolos has a large stock of 1970s–1990s apartment blocks, and that fact governs most of what is different about solar here.

The roof usually belongs to everyone. In a block, the roof slab is common property. An individual flat owner cannot simply place an array on it: the decision goes through the management committee, and the agreement needs to cover the area used, the cable route down the building, and responsibility for the waterproofing that was opened. Committees meet when they meet, which is why apartment installations here run longer than houses of the same size. Roofs of that vintage have usually been re-waterproofed at least once, sometimes in layers nobody recorded, so a survey that opens a test area before quoting is worth more than a faster quote.

Heat, because this is inland. Nicosia's inland position gives the widest temperature range on the island, which drives insulation and shading specifications across every trade — and photovoltaic output falls as module temperature rises, with no sea breeze to help. In practice: a proper airflow gap under a flat-roof array rather than modules laid tight to the slab, and an inverter mounted somewhere shaded and ventilated rather than on a west-facing wall where it will spend August throttling itself.

Dust rather than salt. Coastal towns worry about salt corrosion; the Nicosia plain deals in dust, including the spring events that coat a roof in a morning. Soiling losses build gradually enough that nobody notices, and cleaning recovers them — but only if there is safe, permanent roof access. Ask how the array will be reached once the scaffold has gone.

The grid step is not the installer's to promise. A grid-connected system is energised against an application handled by the Electricity Authority of Cyprus, under the net-metering framework the Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority sets. The installation can finish in days and then wait on the connection side, so anyone budgeting time rather than money should ask about the application queue.

Does a solar company in Strovolos need to be licensed?

The connection to the supply does. That part is signed off by a licensed electrical contractor, and the Electricity Authority of Cyprus energises the system against that certification rather than an assurance. A company that sells panels is not automatically the one that may connect them, so ask whose licence the certificate will carry.

How long does the net-metering application take?

That sits with the Electricity Authority of Cyprus, not the installer. What governs it is whether the paperwork was complete on submission, the supply arrangement at the property, and the queue at the time. An installer who commits to a date for it is describing a hope.

Can a flat owner in a Strovolos apartment block fit solar?

Not unilaterally. The roof is common property, so the management committee decides, and the agreement needs to cover the area used, the cable route and responsibility for the waterproofing afterwards. Building-wide systems serving lifts, pumps and stairwell lighting are often the easier proposition.
