Checking a Cyprus Business Before Booking in 2026
Check the contracting identity, current credentials and written scope before paying a Cyprus business for work or services.

Before paying a Cyprus business, connect the directory entry to the entity on the quotation, the person authorising the work and the account receiving payment. Then check the credentials relevant to that particular service. A matching phone number or attractive website does not establish current licensing, and a registration document does not settle the scope of the booking.
Start with a booking record, not a reputation score
For a homeowner arranging work in the Republic of Cyprus, the first useful check is traceability. Save the enquiry, response and quotation together. Record the business name, the work address and the contact who can approve changes. This is especially useful when a property owner lives abroad and a local key holder arranges attendance.
Keep the directory's role in perspective. An entry can help find a business and its advertised service area. It is not our certification of availability, insurance or a particular professional qualification. Any claim about a provider should be checked against its current documents rather than inferred from its position in a list.
Use the initial exchange to determine whether the business is offering an inspection, a defined repair or a larger project. These involve different commitments. A message saying that a technician can attend is not necessarily acceptance of the entire repair brief.
Match names before sending a deposit
Ask who issues the quotation and final invoice. Where a trading brand differs from the contracting entity, request an explanation of the relationship. A difference can be legitimate, but the paperwork should make it understandable.
If payment instructions name another person or entity, stop the payment process long enough to obtain and independently confirm the explanation. Use contact information already established through a reliable route. Do not rely solely on a last-minute message changing bank details.
The same principle applies to subcontracting. Ask which business remains responsible to the customer and which tasks are passed to another trade. It is more useful to have a clear contracting arrangement than to collect unrelated company documents without knowing which entity has accepted the job.
Avoid sending identity documents or alarm codes with a public directory enquiry. Share only what is necessary through an appropriate private exchange after the recipient and purpose have been established.
Check the credentials that fit the work
The Cyprus business portal distinguishes contractor registration from the annual licence for regulated building and civil-engineering contracting. It describes registration as indefinite, annual licence validity ending on 31 December of the year issued, and five project classes. These are separate questions: registration history, current annual authority and the class appropriate to the project.
That is not a rule requiring every service provider to show the same building-contractor licence. For other regulated work, ask which profession-specific evidence is applicable and verify it with the responsible authority where needed.
A useful request names the actual activity. Asking whether a company is registered can produce a company-registration certificate while leaving the relevant professional question unanswered. Asking which current authorisation covers the proposed work is more precise.
Retain the document details and the date checked. If work crosses into another calendar year, ask how the required annual status will be maintained. Do not assume that an earlier copy settles the position throughout a long programme.
Turn the enquiry into an assessable scope
Provide the town, property type, observed problem and access conditions. For a plumbing enquiry, describe the affected outlets and when the symptom appears. For a repair to a common roof, identify who can authorise access. State observations rather than prescribing a cause has not been established.
Ask the business what it needs before giving a firm quotation. An inspection fee may be reasonable, but its purpose and charging basis should be visible. Clarify whether the visit provides diagnosis, measurements or preparation of the business's own sales proposal.
Give shortlisted businesses the same baseline information. If one recommends a different solution, ask it to explain the difference. The alternative may be useful, but it should not disappear into a price comparison that assumes all providers have quoted the same task.
Compare evidence in a small decision table
The following is an editorial comparison method, not a rating of actual Cyprus providers:
| Question | What to keep | What remains unresolved without it |
|---|---|---|
| Who accepts the job? | Named quotation and invoice entity | Responsibility for the service |
| What is included? | Location-specific written scope | Whether totals cover the same outcome |
| What can change? | Allowances and approval process | Exposure to additions |
| Which credentials apply? | Relevant current records | Authority for the actual activity |
| Who handles a problem? | Contact and agreed defect procedure | Route for follow-up |
A provider may need time to supply information. The issue is whether the missing item is identified and resolved before the decision that depends on it. A persuasive explanation is not a substitute for the applicable document, but neither is a folder of documents a substitute for a clear scope.
Read payment stages against the work
Ask what a deposit reserves or purchases. Does it secure attendance, order identified materials or begin a design stage? Record the conditions before paying. This guide does not prescribe a universal deposit percentage or a legal entitlement to withhold payment.
For staged work, connect each payment stage to a defined deliverable. Agree how substitutions and extra work are approved. A household contingency budget is not permission for a contractor to spend the same amount without instruction.
Check whether the quoted total includes applicable tax, travel, access equipment and disposal. If an amount is provisional, ask how the final amount is determined. Request the accepted quotation version on the invoice record.
Consumer rules depend on the transaction. EU information about buying goods should not be imported unchanged into every inspection, repair or building service. Likewise, a manufacturer's commercial warranty does not identify every obligation of the installer. Ask for the actual terms and obtain advice where a dispute needs legal assessment.
Keep the evidence after booking
A sensible booking file remains useful after the provider arrives. Add approved changes, invoices and completion records. For equipment, retain product details and relevant user instructions. For concealed work, agree which photographs or specialist test records will be provided.
When a different provider later investigates a fault, this file explains what was installed and what the first business was instructed to do. It also prevents an old quotation being mistaken for the completed scope.
If a directory record is inaccurate, distinguish correction of the listing from a complaint about the service. Submit the relevant factual correction through the directory's process without publishing private account or property-security information.
Common questions
Does a registered business mean the particular service is licensed?
Not necessarily. Company identity and profession-specific authority are different checks. Ask which current records apply to the exact work and contracting entity.
Is an old annual contractor licence sufficient for a new booking?
The official portal describes annual validity by the year of issue. Request evidence relevant to the proposed work period rather than assuming a historic copy remains current.
Should every candidate provide a fixed quote immediately?
Some tasks require diagnosis or measurement first. Ask what remains uncertain and what the inspection costs. A clearly bounded first stage can be more usable than an unexplained total.
Does this process prove a provider will perform well?
It improves the evidence behind a booking. It does not predict workmanship, availability or the outcome of a particular project. Assess the proposed method, relevant credentials and agreed responsibilities together.
