A furniture shop in Cyprus can be assessed on four things that leave a paper trail: whether the company behind the trading name is registered and still active, whether the quoted price includes VAT and delivery, whether the item is held in stock on the island or ordered from a factory abroad, and whether a delivery vehicle can physically reach the address. Showroom size, catalogue thickness and the attention of the sales floor say nothing about any of the four.

Furniture is one of the few household purchases where the failure normally arrives after the money has moved — on the delivery date that slips, at the stairwell the wardrobe will not turn in, or a year later when a mechanism gives out and nobody can name the party responsible. Everything below is checkable before a deposit is paid.

What can actually be verified

Almost everything that decides whether a furniture purchase goes well is documentary, and almost none of it is on display in the showroom.

Verifiable before any money changes hands: the legal entity behind the trading name, its registration number and whether it is still active; whether the business is registered for VAT and can issue a VAT invoice; the registered office and the trading address; whether the item quoted is stock on the island or a factory order; the written lead time; the delivery terms and the point of the property they end at; and the guarantee document, including which party issues it.

Not verifiable in advance: whether a sofa is still comfortable after a few years, whether an oak veneer moves in an unconditioned Nicosia summer, whether the delivery crew takes care on a painted staircase. Those are outcomes, not records, and no amount of research converts one into the other.

This directory does not record ratings, star scores or customer testimonials, and none appear on any listing. Each profile records registration data, the category the business trades in, the towns it covers and the date each field was last checked. That is a deliberate limit: furniture retail in Cyprus turns over a small number of transactions per shop, and a rating built on that volume also blurs the two separate sources of failure in this trade — the retailer and the manufacturer, which for imported ranges are rarely the same organisation.

Registrations that matter

Furniture retail is not a licensed trade in the Republic of Cyprus. There is no professional register for it in the way there is for engineers or lawyers, so the checks are corporate rather than professional, and they are quick.

The Registrar of Companies. Name, registration number, incorporation date, current status and registered office are all public. A trading name that differs from the registered entity is entirely ordinary in Cyprus; what matters is that the invoice carries the registered entity and its number, because that entity is the party any guarantee claim is made against. A company shown as struck off or in the process of being struck off is not a party worth holding a guarantee from.

VAT registration with the Tax Department. The standard VAT rate of 19% applies to furniture, and whether that rate sits inside or outside the figure on a quote changes the comparison between two shops materially. A business that cannot issue a VAT invoice is a problem for anyone buying through a company, furnishing a rental property, or expecting to reclaim anything.

Incorporation date against guarantee length. A commercial guarantee that runs longer than the company issuing it has existed is a statement of intent, not a measure of cover. The incorporation date is on the register, so this takes under a minute.

The point where delivery becomes installation. Fitted wardrobes, kitchen units, storage anchored into structure and anything connected to electricity or water are no longer retail. A furniture company's registration covers selling; it does not cover the electrical connection of a hob or the plumbing of a sink unit. Where a shop supplies fitting, the fitter needs the relevant trade registration — a separate check against a separate register, which is what the trades listings and the wider services index are for.

The statutory guarantee sits underneath all of it. Consumer goods sold in Cyprus carry a two-year conformity guarantee running from delivery. A commercial guarantee offered by a shop or a manufacturer sits on top of that; it does not replace it, and a shop that presents its own terms as the only cover available is describing the situation incorrectly.

Questions to ask

  1. Is this piece in stock in Cyprus, or is it being ordered?

    This single question separates a delivery in days from a delivery in months. Imported ranges from European factories are commonly quoted in months rather than weeks, and the deposit is usually taken at the point of order, so the money is committed long before the goods exist.

  2. What is the delivery date in writing, and what happens if it slips?

    A date on the order form is a different object from a date said across a desk. The useful follow-up is what the remedy is: a partial refund, a cancellation right, or nothing at all.

  3. Does the figure include VAT, delivery, carry-up and assembly?

    These are four separate charges in this market and they are frequently presented as one number until the invoice arrives. Delivery to the kerb and delivery into the third-floor bedroom are different services at different prices.

  4. Can the vehicle reach the address, and can the item get inside?

    This is where deliveries actually fail. On the hillside plots around Peyia, steep access roads limit the size of vehicle that can reach the door at all. In Strovolos and the surrounding Nicosia suburbs, much of the stock is 1970s–1990s apartment blocks with narrow stairwells, tight landings and lift cars sized for people rather than for a three-seat sofa. Measuring the lift car, the landing turn and the doorway before ordering costs nothing; discovering the problem on delivery day costs a restocking charge.

  5. What does the guarantee cover, item by item?

    Frames, mechanisms, foam and fabric commonly carry different periods under the same commercial guarantee. Asking which party honours each — the shop or the manufacturer — establishes in advance who answers the phone.

  6. For outdoor and coastal use, what are the fixings and the finish?

    Along the seafront at Kato Paphos and equivalent exposed coastal strips, the air is salt-laden and galvanised or marine-grade fixings are the standard specification. Mild steel bolts on a teak bench, or untreated fixings on a powder-coated aluminium frame, will show within a season.

What a good quote looks like

Those ranges are read from recorded quotes when the page loads rather than written into this article, so they cannot quietly go stale. What they do not do is tell anyone whether a particular quote is fair, because the range covers different specifications. The document itself is what carries that information.

A quote worth comparing against another names the model or reference, states dimensions in millimetres, specifies material and finish by code rather than by adjective, shows VAT as its own line, separates delivery from carry-up from assembly from removal of the old item, gives the lead time as a date rather than a duration, states the deposit as both a figure and a percentage, and says when the balance falls due and against what event.

A quote that gives a single number and a promise is not comparable with anything, and requesting it in itemised form is a normal commercial request that established shops handle without difficulty.

Warning signs

A price given only verbally, or written as one number with no VAT line, makes every subsequent conversation harder and should be resolved before a deposit rather than after.

A deposit requested in cash with a receipt that carries no company name and no registration number leaves nothing to make a claim against.

A confident short lead time for an item the shop has already confirmed is not held in stock. The two statements cannot both be accurate for a factory order from abroad.

Delivery described as included, with no mention of which floor. The crew that arrives is contracted to a point, and if that point is the kerb, the sofa stays on the kerb.

A commercial guarantee that outlives the company offering it, which the incorporation date on the register settles immediately.

Pressure to sign before a discount expires. Discounts in furniture retail recur; the delivery date and the guarantee terms are what do not improve later.

Common questions

Are furniture shops in Cyprus licensed or regulated?

Not as a trade. Furniture retail requires no professional licence in the Republic of Cyprus, so the meaningful checks are company registration status at the Registrar of Companies and VAT registration with the Tax Department. Where a shop also fits kitchens or connects appliances, that work falls under trades that do have registration requirements, and those are checked separately.

Is VAT included in Cypriot furniture prices?

Sometimes, and the quote should say. The standard VAT rate of 19% applies to furniture, so the difference between an inclusive and an exclusive figure is large enough to reverse which of two quotes is cheaper. Anyone comparing shops should confirm the basis before comparing the numbers.

How long does imported furniture take to arrive?

Imported ranges are commonly quoted in months rather than weeks, and the driver is the factory's production slot rather than the shipping. What shortens it is buying from stock held on the island; what lengthens it is a custom fabric, a non-standard dimension, or an order placed close to a European factory shutdown.

No. No ratings, review scores or testimonials are collected or displayed anywhere on the site. Listings record registration data, category, coverage and the date each field was last checked, and the furniture category page and the area pages order businesses on those recorded fields rather than on opinion.

What happens if the furniture does not fit up the stairs?

That depends entirely on what the order form says, which is why it is worth reading before signing. Access is normally treated as the buyer's responsibility, and a failed delivery can attract a return charge. Measuring the lift car, the stairwell width and the tightest landing turn in advance is the only reliable protection, particularly in the older apartment stock of the Nicosia suburbs and on the steep hillside approaches in the Paphos district.
